The idea of these Phillips consoles was to have a decent looking machine in the living room. It would replace your cd player and be a computer and console all in one machine. The cpu was a kind of motorola 68000 adaption, so not the weakest possible thing.
You had no internet at that time, instead you could put a complete encyclopaedia into the player and search for interactive presentations of words, you could watch a movie. Although bigger movies would need 2 cd’s. You could watch your photo CDs.
There were even Mario and Zelda games and shooters. But of course, I am only interested in Chess…..

This machine could have been the ideal chess station. Put 1-2 million games onto the cd. And several engines , not only sargon but chessmaster (kittinger) , rebel (ed schroeder), chess system tal (whittington) and others. Huge opening books, big databases, all in the living room.
