It was always nice to have some of those semi mysterious options, even in an open source program like Glaurung. It gave people a chance to play programmer without having to learn any programming. The problems started for Tord when he had to explain to everybody what the options did, and the questions usually inversely proportional to knowledge of chess programming. Quickly outsourcing to a helpdesk in India or so was needed to answer all the questions. When Tord felt users did not understand the option after all, the code ruthlessly disappeared from the program pale no matter how nice the idea was. It was not lost because the sourcecode was still there, but still a bit of a pity for some learning code etc.

I could try providing a vector (all the search parameters) without any names, eg no info what each element did, and a primitive Python SPSA tuner

Users insane enough and with enough cores and several days could try

You never know what you could find with 800 settings Smile But if Thorsten does not like the idea, nobody else will try I think. The people with all the big machines these days are all locked into Elo battles in dungeons, Steampunk enginerooms, how do you get them out.

I used to have Bringer beta versions with a bazillion of options the world never came to see - or bazillion I thought - never more than 10 from memory btw. Gerrit had a great understanding of users and potential problems and shortcomings.

For the interesting ones ( differerent kind of pruning schemes), I don't think it was ever really worked out which ones were the best. Something became the release version that didn't behave too badly.

Then there was a time where I really payed attention to general user experience with Crafty. Crafty gave a lot of freedom to users - but users were not really competent to use them. At least two third of reported problems were just wrong setups was my then conclusion.

I don't want to work out which CSTal or Rebel options make the most sense. Just give me threads and hash - I will probably be competent enough to work out how to set these up.
