I'm a guy who lifts weights, guzzles beer, likes boxing and other barbaric shit...
...but I'm also an introvert who overthinks *everything* and can be moved deeply by music.
You fellas know I'm very antiwar, and today I wanna share a really beautiful song.
Listen with headphones and after a couple drinks and you really *feel* this song's essence.
Quote :
Took a boat over Lake Geneva It was raining all night long We were lucky and we saw no enemy And came from Switzerland, poor refugees Far from the guns of war We said goodbye to it all They brought us into a nurse's station Half a mile behind the lines Oh Lord, how my heart was breaking To see the children, and the walking wounded Hoping for a ticket home And say goodbye to it all I woke up on a cold blue morning To see her there, standing right beside me Long years since I left her at the borderline And how she found me I'll never know But we decided there and then To say goodbye to it all To it all Say goodbye to it all Say goodbye to it all Took a train from Paris to the ocean Found a small hotel by the coast As we walked along the beaches of Normandy We came to Juno, Omaha and Gold And whispered a prayer for the boys Who said goodbye to it all Now we've got our own place by the water And I have a job in the old hotel She is ready and she's hoping for a daughter Well I don't mind, we've made our choice We've got all the time in the world We said goodbye to it all We said goodbye to it all Bye to it all Say goodbye to it all Say goodbye to it all Say goodbye to it all Say goodbye to it all Say goodbye
Very deep lyrics if you pause to catch the meaning.

Fight war, not wars. Fight war, not wars. Fight war, not wars. Fight war, not wars. Fight war, not wars. Fight war, not wars. Fight war, not wars. Fight war, not wars. Fight war, not wars. Fight war, not wars. Fight war, not wars.
Generals gathered in their masses Just like witches at black masses Evil minds that plot destruction Sorcerer of death's construction In the fields the bodies burning As the war machine keeps turning Death and hatred to Mankind Poisoning their brainwashed minds... Oh Lord yeah!
Politicians hide themselves away They only started the war Why should they go out to fight? They leave that role to the poor
Time will tell on their power minds Making war just for fun Treating people just like pawns in chess Wait 'till their judgment day comes, yeah!
Now in darkness, world stops turning Ashes where the bodies burning No more war pigs have the power Hand of God has struck the hour Day of Judgment, God is calling On their knees the war pigs crawling Begging mercy for their sins Satan, laughing, spreads his wings... Oh Lord, yeah!

Tell me where the flowers are, where have they gone? Tell me where the flowers are, what happened? Tell me where the flowers are, girls quickly picked them. When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn?
Tell me where the girls are, where have they gone? Tell me where the girls are, what happened? Tell me where the girls are, men took them swiftly. When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn?
Tell me where the men are, where are they? Tell me where the men are, what happened? Tell me where the men are, moved out, the war begins. When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn?
Tell me where are the soldiers, where are they? Yes, say where the soldiers are, what happened? Tell me where the soldiers are, the wind blows over graves. When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn?
Tell me where the graves are, where are they? Tell me where the graves are, what happened? Tell me where the graves are, flowers bloom in the summer wind. When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn?
Tell me where the flowers are, where have they gone? Tell me where the flowers are, what happened? Tell me where the flowers are, girls quickly picked them. When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn?

Thanks for asking, I will try.
It is perfectly understandable that you can't comprehend the piece of music above. I would expect nothing else, it clearly does not carry any meaning for you.
The recording quality is poor, the voice is not the strongest, these aspects are irrelevant to me. Brendan asked for "songs that moved you deeply", for me, the violin and clarinet evoke perfectly the landscape and people of Epirus, and by association, the people and landscapes of Sfakia and south-west Crete. Both are a warrior like people, with huge hearts, both landscapes are wild and mountainous, this piece of music transports me to that feeling of arriving in Greece after disembarking from the ferry from Italy, knowing I have returned to the place where people are real, and still connected to the land, a place of intoxicating smells and sounds, and great food, no longer in the land of shallow plastic people with big egos.
The name Anton, or Antonis is how I am known around Sfakia, my english name is Tony. Spent a lot of time down there walking in the mountains and coastal paths (about 2 years in total) living in caves and on the beaches, finding odd jobs to extend my stay there, because spending another day in that region is infinitely preferable to returning to the drab, depressing UK. The first time there, age about 21, I went with my girlfriend for a week, but soon realised I could not return, so after saying goodbye to the girlfriend at the airport, managed to eek out an extra 8 weeks there, this did not go down well with the girlfriend's family Last occasion I managed to live there for 6 months. Hopefully one day I can go there and not return.
Indian music also moves me deeply, more deeply, for reasons probably too deep and personal to discuss here.
Yes, I am aware that most if not everyone here who click on the following "gems" will find them intolerable, none more so than yourself. Western music is all about the voice, because that is all there is, the shallow culture does not produce works that touch the soul in the way these do. Appearance, ego, a polished product designed to generate revenue define western music, some of the charm of the tracks below is the fact that these qualities play no part, sure, most are poor recordings, which is unfortunate, but these are from the 50's and 60's, Indian music today lacks the soulfullness of the past and is in decline sadly.
I have included some of the comments to demonstrate these are not totally without merit, to some at least.
The last 2 tracks by Shobha Gurtu are likely more accessable to a western ear. I can't express in words the greatness of Shobha Gurtu's voice in her earlier years, her later music, not so much.

Anton,
Indian or Greek doesn't matter - here are the characteristics of the music you like:
* traditional sounding: it's important to you that the musicians play on old instruments
* small numbers of instruments, each producing a thin sound (fat sounds tend to have multiple sources, like a chord: to produce a good fat sound on a synthesiser requires 3 sound wave generators)
* wailing style of singing
* droning, high pitch thin instrument
* single thin drum with rapid attack and long decay (explanation link)
* you're favoured music also has a distinct tempo
* you like your tracks to be 6-10 minutes, and to have limited variation for the duration of the song
I don't share your taste, but it's rare to stumble across someone who thinks their tastes are varied - but who are actually selecting the same music from completely different sources, so thank you for sharing!

Let me promote my choice. It is an ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT song, and Michael performed it to perfection.
"If you want to make the world a better place take a look at yourself and make a change" - not many songs have better lines than that IMO.
Remember: when you see people who have lost a limb or a sense (e.g. sight or sound), you can see their injury - but there are a huge number of people walking around - and probably some of the people who you think you know, who have deep and debilitating wounds on the inside which you cannot see. Don't ever pass up an opportunity to encourage someone or to inspire someone. As the song says, take a look at yourself as well: will your dreams die with you? Following your dreams will turn you into an inspired person - and the world would be better if there were more inspired people in it.
Even now, 32 years on, I STILL have to fight back the tears on every hearing. Thank you for the music, Michael.

Not at all, it is true I like traditional music, the rest of what you write is simply wrong, here are 5 more tracks picked at random from my collection, have fun trying to categorize these into a list

It's very clear that the thing that's most important to you is that the music be simple and not varying very much.
I think you might like this page - it's on online music sequencer I just found. After just a couple of minutes playing with it, I've made a little repeating tune that I like with just 2 instruments. Give it a try!

If I were to categorize your music tastes in a list it would be:-
Micheal Jackson.
Micheal Jackson.
Maybe some other black music.
Micheal Jackson.
Am I close?
2 more to confound your attempts to make a list, Liszt....

No. If you look at his dance moves, they are often exceptional, but some of his music is disappointing, despite always having exceptional musicians working on it. Man In The Mirror is extremely good in multiple dimensions though, and he has done other very good tracks as well.

Hmmm... a single instrument played in the style of two instruments (the two ends of the keyboard), and, in places, sounding a lot like simple sequenced music.
Have you tried the online sequencer I linked in my previous post?

From 1984: the right song at the right time. Before this, most people didn't know the song's subject. After this, everyone did. Crying permitted!
