Not sure if I posted about it somewhere, but I decided to use Othello as a testbed for some new ideas (the dev/train cycle is much shorter). NNUE chess seems to me to be something of a treadmill, one continually has to get the latest ideas (often worth 50 Elo) to play catch up, since really, most chess engines nowadays are just variations on the same theme, with some very smart programming ideas added in (I prefer chess ideas over and above code efficiency, but if you don’t do the coding efficiencies you’re just going to fall behind).
Hence the switch to another domain with faster dev cycle to see if anything different can be found. Maybe, maybe not, probably not, but I don’t want to just be doing the same stuff as everyone else.

Oh, I’ll probably revert to the engine in a couple of months, but only if I can find something different. Chasing students with chess engine code efficiencies is not my idea of fun, it’s become an engineering problem more than a chess idea problem, which is a shame. New stars arising at the horizon, never heard of Obsidian.

It has made huge progress in a few weeks, it is not yet in the CEGT 40/4 list, only version 6.0, the tests for 7.0 are done. https://cegt.forumieren.com/t2031-testing-obsidian-7-0nn-x64-1cpu

It has an extremely small net, so I guess the engine has a good future, provided the author has good hardware. Vas (of Rybka) already said that in 2004/5, hardware is very important.

Your own hardware is not crucial. All new programmers are using the free resources of openbench and others
but only for testing new NN/ideas.., not for NNUE development.

I am a little worried because so many engines do copy repeat names of older chess engines.
Obisidian was a dedicated chess computer and princhess was also an engine beeing uses in dedicated chess computers.

I wonder why the people use obsidian or princhess. There are so many other names to choose.

Caissa e.g. is the next program using the name of an older engine.

Caissa does not yet exist as a program name but only the Russian "Kaissa" from 1970. https://www.chessprogramming.org/Kaissa.

Novag "Obsidian" was released perhaps in 1995.

It's not the test capacity, as you can see on the blog I can do 10,00 to 12,000 games in one day. It's training software plus the size of the data set that makes things slow.

I assume that it is only a matter of time before this changes, perhaps another six months.

The gap to Stockfish is still clear, but it is decreasing with each new version of the currently active engine developments. I use the same very balanced openings as in my official tests for CEGT.

Point is Rebel-Dev (the one I am trying to improve) is already on the level of CSTAL-2.0 since August but after that I hardly made progress, maybe 5 elo.

Problem is my hardware, with 26B of data 400 epochs (8 days) is not enough to get the maximum, 800 epochs at least. That would mean 16 days. I pass for that. I asked Sopel how much time it takes him to run 400 epochs and he said 18 hours, that's a factor of 12 faster. His hardware, the A100 GPU, only 35.000 euro or so....
