A bit of science that might be useful to you:

* body language signs we've been told to look out for are not reliable indicators of deception (particularly with people who deceive frequently and confidently)

* the most reliable way to detect deception is to think critically about what you've been told

The good news about that is that this "most reliable indicator" works for written communication (e.g. forums!) as well as face-to-face conversation.
