According to a new model, dark energy is likely to lose its repulsive power, and stop driving the universe apart. This can be expected to happen quite soon.

However, most of the galaxies we can see are a long way away - so it could literally be many tens of millions of years before we know that this process has started! hence it's possible that it has actually started already.
