Alekhine was dead drunk when he played the match. Yet despite all this he still played well. Euwe was lucky and won by 1 points difference. In return match after Alekhine quiet drinking with the help from his wife, he easily outclassed Euwe and won the return match...

I believe I remember reading that back in the 90's somewhere.

Somewhere I read a story how Alekhine quit drinking. Between the first and the second match he bought a cow. There were two ideas behind it: 1) milk instead of alcohol, 2) tending to a cow takes time, so there are less chances for socializing and drinking.
