I think the issue would be a watch's IO capabilities:
* not easy to see the position clearly on a watch face
* not easy to move the pieces
Has anyone ever tried playing chess on such a small display?
There have long been chess sets available for dolls houses - but I've never heard of anyone actually playing a game of chess on such a board:

And really big displays. If you just got to play chess on your watch.

Put a large strap on a small Android phone and call it a
super-smart watch!
Can't understand why I didn't think of that myself!
Does a smartphone armband count as a watch?

I would recommend doing more research before ordering it, though.
On the basis of a quick read, I think it would run DroidFish - the Android version of StockFish.
I suspect that such devices will be more common, and hence cheaper, in 5 years time. Right now, if you're willing to stretch your definition of a wrist watch, a phone armband is probably the best option:
