Subject: Is there a way to convert old .MVS opening books? Fri Apr 30, 2021 12:31 am
Hello everyone my first topic here, recently I've been searching the web for old gambit books. Found few with .MVS extension (books used by Chess tiger and early versions of Rebel) My question is if there is a way to convert this books into newer formats? I've heard that earlier Fritz and Chessbase versions were able to but unfortunately I only have the newest Fritz17 version which does not support those old .MVS opening book formats Any help is appreciated

I think I somewhere have an old tool that converts *.MVS to PGN or RBM. Will look for it.

Each move is 5 bytes, the fifth byte decides to play a move (space) or not (-). I know there is software that uses this format to create a PGN or Book.
2.mainbook.pgn and tourbook.pgn. These are the last Noomen books from 2000-2002 which I in 2016 (or so) converted to Polyglot. Also here counts moves marked with { - } don't play. But it is save to create a polyglot book from it since the first { - } case decides the the result, a white move with { - } the result is 0-1, a black move with { - } gets 1-0, when there are no { - } cases the result is a draw. Polyglot --Makebook relies on the result of games.
3. util obk2rbm usage: obk2rbm sharp sharp
OBK is the format used by many old engines, the most popular one is Chessmaster. Not sure if it works for Chessmaster books but it works with sharp.obk, a Noomen book.

RBM to PGN conversion is somewhere hidden in an old ProTools util from 10-15 years ago. I will make it available soon. Stay tuned.
