It is a bit sad that many of these projects never truly mature: authors are only motivated to create an engine for the rating lists and often do not implement features more suitable and useful for ordinary users: no multipv, no levels, no features for analysis, etc. GUIs also focus on rating lists and engine testing: Banksia GUI is a mess -- I am used to different, non-intuitive software and old software, but I've never seen a GUI solely focused on engine testing and engines' tournaments -- even Arena is better, and Arena is an awful GUI. One cannot read a pgn file in BSG correctly.
And then, the moment one starts to use an engine the project is all of a sudden dead. I understand that many authors have other jobs, lack time, but I would not like a world where "there can be only one", and I would like to see a strong, well featured engine: Koivisto will probably not be developed any more, and it's the same with so many other interesting engines, already abandonware.
