how to post chess games (and puzzles) Empty
PostSubject: how to post chess games (and puzzles)   how to post chess games (and puzzles) EmptySat Nov 28, 2020 3:47 pm

This forum allows posting of chess games shown as interactive javascript chessboards.

To post a chess game, you need add to your post the chess game in PGN format surrounded by the pgn tags:

how to post chess games (and puzzles) Pgn110

You can add more than one game within the pgn tags.

For example, adding this to your post

how to post chess games (and puzzles) Pgn210

results in this chessboard

[pgn]
[Event ""]
[Site "Paris"]

[Event ""]
[Site "New York"]
[Date "1857"]

[Black "Paul Morphy"]
[Result "0-1"]

26. Rxf1 Re2 27. Ra1 Rh6 28. d4 Be3 0-1
[/pgn]

Notes and limitations:
- games might include comments and variations
- you can add multiple games for a single chessboard
- for a technical limitation, PGNs exceeding a certain maximum size won't be displayed; the limit is about 4000 chars; if you exceed the limit, the chessboard won't display; try posting fewer games or removing unnecessary comments
- anything you post in-between pgn tags gets converted into a chessboard, even if nested into a code or quote tag
- you can also post chess puzzles (see below)

Example of chess puzzles, add this to your post

how to post chess games (and puzzles) Pgn313

To get this puzzle (click on the question mark to see the solution):

[puzzle]
[SetUp "1"]
[FEN "1r6/p1kb1p1p/3p2p1/PP4P1/1R6/4P1KP/5PB1/8 w - - 3 37"]
37. b6 ab6 38. a6 {White wins} 1-0
[/puzzle]

One more hint for those not familiar with the pgn4web chessboard: if you click square H8 you'll get the help pages.

PS: if you click square E8 you'll get a popup mini-board showing engine analysis of the position; engine is VERY weak, but bear in mind it runs as a javascript app on your browser!

Additional info -

Clicking on squares may give extra information, hint, start clicking on a8, b8 and see what happens.

b8 - showing EPD and FEN.
c8 - showing the PGN
g8 - overview of all the click-square options.

I don't like it, that eval and depth get lost from the PGN if you post a game like that.
Do people really look at games on the webpage itself? I'd rather copy-paste it into my chess GUI of choice.
