Posts : Join date : Congratulations on the draw against Stoofvlees, I know how strong it is. It's nice that Johan de Koning is there in person, doesn't Johan have any ambitions to publish his programme as a UCI engine ?

I can see that on your rating lists, Stoofvlees best engine after the big 3. The King is further developed, it has MP support, don't know how strong it is.

Posts : Join date : Location : I much enjoyed the Rebel - Hiarcs game. Watching it I felt like I was reading Reti's book on Hypermodern versus Classic approach to the opening. I thought Rebel was playing the white side flawlessly and Hiarcs defense was about as good as it could get. Draw was well deserved by both sides.

Posts : Join date : Since the middle of the week there has been an update of the HCE with an "improved" Hiarcs 15.1 engine.
In my tests for CEGT 40/4, I have not yet been able to see any increase in playing strength.
I was a bit irritated by the fact that the new binaries are about 2 times smaller.
Rebel 15 is about 100 Elo stronger than Hiarcs 15/15.1 in our tests (40/4)

I haven't tried HIARCS for more than a decade, but the old versions of the engine were focused on the evaluation. We see that top engines have good nets, but the search is the thing giving more Elos: SF has an ultra-fast search, Komodo since Komodo 8 is focused on the search, Koivisto, Berserk, rofChade, all have ultra-fast searches. The only engine at the top that is not that fast is SlowChess Blitz, and Jonathan Kreuzer is one of the few focusing on the evaluation and experimenting with nets (btw, SCB's search is not that slow).
Among the top 20 engines from Frank's rating list, less than half have good AND original nets. SF, probably Dragon, Seer, SCB (several), Rebel. Other authors are very handicapped by the means that must be deployed to create neural networks and are moving towards smaller NNs, which are easier to build.
