| Subject: Does the verification search have to come back? Tue Aug 02, 2022 6:24 am | |
| Hello all, I wrote a little bit about this a while ago in Talkchess, but I have not really gotten around to do any testing at all and it has been awhile since Vincent's thread. I have not seen anyone else writing about this, about Zugzwang and Rebel 15 I mean, so maybe it is not an issue at all. Maybe NNUE is by nature better with Zugzwang detection? The only evidence I have for that is that AlphaZero had some famous Zugzwang moves that gave it a famous win over helpless Stockfish. But then, I don't think Alpha Zero did know about Nullmove, because it had a Monte Carlo search only... That is certainly not the case in Toga, it depends on Nullmove pruning much more than Alpha Zero. Fruit has a verification search but it is only for very basic endgames. It was probably removed in Toga because a verification search will always be a little slowdown. Every Elo increase is good, thought the Toga magicians. | |

| Verification search is a small elo loser in the grand scheme of testing thousands of games. However on important tournaments with few games it's better to set it on. | |
