It looks as though Covid infection is increasing again in Russia. Unfortunately, I don't think it's going to be serious enough this time to force Putin to get out of Ukraine.

Sadly, people still die of Covid these days. Even in remote areas like in the Arizona desert you are not safe. I encountered an obituary of comet hunter Donald Machholz in the digital Sky and Telescope pages. I had not heard of him before, but it was an interesting article:

(it is not trivial to distinguish infections from antibodies by vaccination I think but apparently they can do that well enough)

Not going to be as bad as the first time around, when Italian hospitals were absolutely overwhelmed.

Never had a positive test - though I think I might have had it during the early period before tests were available: I felt very hot (one of the symptoms at the time), took off my clothes and lay on the wooden bathroom floor for 20 minutes until I cooled down. When I stood up, there was a wet outline of a man on the floor. I should have taken a photo!

I got my Corona booster last Tuesday, with Sinterklaas. Only day in more than five years with snow everywhere. More than an hour late but I did not hurry anywhere on the road. It was not very busy, most people who wanted it had already had a booster from October on and made their own appointments. I had a cold, a week or two before and I did not like it, it was not Corona I don't think I've ever had it. But still that prompted me to get a shot. It is not completely innocent, Omicron and the later variants I mean, especially if you get long Covid. I more or less have chronic colds, all the time so maybe I'm a bit protected... It seems you can have the Common cold version of long Covid syndrome too, it was not recognized until now.

One reason why they probably won't go to lockdown even if very high numbers of virus particles in wastewater etc. is because the later variants are so contagious, and a booster shot probably also does not much to stop spreading the virus, it is more for protecting people at risk. If you work in health care etc., it still is a good idea to get a booster shot even if you still have good immunity still for yourself, from a past infection for instance. If you had an infection three months ago or less there is not so much value.

Why do you think that huge numbers of people are dying? I've not heard of any Covid deaths in a while.
