As it seems this desease will never let us out of the grip. We will not get our normal life back.
Firstly, we don't even know if this new variant is likely to be of concern.
Secondly, to have a reasonable chance of making a dangerous mutation, the virus has to spend a lot of time in a lot of people. Omicron, though, is acting like a global vaccination, which is quickly taking away this opportunity from the virus.
We've had false dawns before with Covid, but IMO there are many good reasons to be optimistic this time.
As a guide, the Omicron outbreak in South Africa started on the 22nd of November and peaked on the 17th December - link. That's a period of 25 days from the start of the outbreak to the peak.
This can only be a rough guide, of course, but the British rapid increase started on the 14th December, so we can expect to peak around the 8th January. Given that we have one of the highest seropositivity rates in the world, we could well peak even before that (South Africa's seropositivity was something like 35% lower than ours at the time IIRC).
Today's UK infection number is an all-time high - 106,122. The previous peak was the 17th December with 92,500.
Another new all-time high today: 119,789
Today's infection number 122,186
For the first time since 24th Dec we have a number for the whole of Britain - and that number is 183,037 (this is less than France, which reported 208,000).
Still rising - 189,213 today.
Still rising: today's infection number is 189,846. Too soon to say for sure, but maybe levelling off?
Finally, we have complete numbers for the whole of Britain again - and that number has jumped to 218,724!
I wonder if that number includes the numbers for the regions of Britain which were previously omitted?

The numbers for England alone (blue in the chart below) have been rising since January 2nd. At a glance, it looks as though people were being careful in the run up to Christmas, but have stopped being careful now.
Same in the Netherlands. People coming back from Austria or Antwerpen or a party island.
Dutch government only cares about number of hospitalizations. Great many people having problems with their upper part of their lungs or being badly ill at home is less worse than young people not going to (sport)school and annoying their parents all day.

Booster vaccin only protects 70% against Omnicron. And after three months about 30-40%.
Per previously linked article in this thread, if you get a Covid infection that breaks through a vaccination, you then get "super immunity" (a lot more antibodies than someone who has had either an infection or a vaccination alone). If you're VERY lucky, here's what will happen:
* you get a breakthrough infection
* because you're vaccinated, the infection will only be mild
* this breakthrough infection leaves you with super-immunity going forward!
I also saw an estimate that 1:15 had Covid in UK previous week. In the Netherlands we reached an all time high yesterday while in lock down. Problem is nobody is taking measures serious anymore. All fed up.

I have to include myself in that category: I was in a supermarket last week, and until I got to the checkout, I completely forgot that I was supposed to be wearing a mask!
In most cases, though, a negative thing has a positive side: when Covid started, gas masks were unavailable. Now, because people have stopped taking Covid seriously, they are cheap and plentiful - link.
Remember: always be positive! You're 31% more likely to come up with a better answer in a positive state of mind (link).

A nice decline - and looking distinctly like a downward trend!
Here you can see how the new wave begins before the delta wave reduced to ground. It builds upon the delta wave, and hell we dont know how high it will rise.

Today's number: 178,250 . To be honest, disappointing. Not much lower than yesterday.
