I can understand why Chris decided to give CS-Tal a world-beating opening book: the opening didn't do Clock any favours here.

In the rest of the game, I think Clock played some clever moves, but seems to have been out-searched again - a big weaknesses of having knowledge at that time (and even now).

summer tournament - Page 6 Empty
PostSubject: Re: summer tournament   summer tournament - Page 6 EmptySat Nov 13, 2021 5:56 pm

The Elektronika IM05 had to play against TASC Final Chess card.

In the end the game was won by the Tasc final chess card. for a long time in the game it looked like a draw, then the elektronika had good chances to win the game.
While black was catching the white Knight the elektronika IM05 would have been able to win in move 44. by playing Kh4!! and moving the h-pawn up to the 8th rank. black could not have stopped this passed pawn running. but this chance was given away with elektronika wrongly moving
44.a4 ?? and so the game was suddenly in favour of black. and the result turned arround.
a human can see this without doing any tree search just by looking on the board. todays engines with their 30-40 plies outcompute this in a similar way, just by pure hardware power.

for the very old machines only knowledge could have allowed this situation to be evaluated correctly.

Because 5 engines have 7 points they force me to continue the tournament until it is much clearer.

Julio Kaplans (who is a strong chess player himself) early dedicated chess computer Superstar in the 36K version (there is a weaker 28K version) beats Colossus Chess 4 C64 with 5 mhz.
Superstar seems somehow oc. i never opened the case of the machine but from the sound of the beeper i would say factor 2.
so maybe 4 mhz instead of 2.

A wonderful game! You don't see openings like that anymore.

yes, this is a special feature of the tiger grenadier.
Steinitz was not impressed.

In another game the classical Novag Super Constellation 4 mhz had to fight the TASC Final chess card (5 mhz).

First it looked like a win of the superconny, but then...

Superconny sacrificed a lot to get those passed pawns, but wasn't able to get them moving quickly enough to compensate for the lost material.

TASC seemed to play the end game more accurately. For all the love we have for superconny, it was an 8-bit v 32 bit game.

Superconny was an early machine 1984 arround. But 6502 4 mhz.
Final chess card by TASC is maybe later but also 6502 5 mhz.
So 8bit vs. 8 bit.

But it is true, kittingers superconny has a passed pawn knowledge lack at that time.

I hadn't realised there were earlier TASC machines which preceded the 32 bit RISC processors.
