3000 cyles in dos Box means 286-AT with 16 mhz.
some machines use FPGA Cards to run these high speeds.
others are overclocked the usual way by exchanging CPU and quarz.

Here a few remarks about the participants:

Chafitz ARB Sargon 4 with 130 mhz is an emulation in the original Chafitz dedicated chess computer made with a pocket beagle cpu.
The Chafitz family was successful before the spracklens worked with Fidelity.
The big wooden dedicated chess computer were expensive.
I am using a new PCB that emulates the 6502 and uses the old sargon 4.0 software that was released with the chafitz machine, the original hardware runs wirh 2 mhz.

Here 130 !!!

The Dos programs run in the usual dos box. I set the cycles to 3000.
Version 93 is exactly the version i used at the championship in paderborn. There CSTAL v93 won e.g. against chess genius.
The only difference is NOW that CSTAL v93 makes only 350-400 NPS on this virtual 286 PC.

Fidelity Kishon Chesster has maybe the spracklen program of the excellence, here running with 8 mhz.
As you maybe know the kishon makes comments about the game with the voice of Ephraim Kishon.

The Millennium Exclusive the King Element is the strongest dedicated chess computer of the millennium company, usually running with 300 mhz and running a de Koning engine.
But here it is reduced to run with 10 mhz to give the dedicated chess computers a chance.

GM petrosian Glasgow 25 mhz is Thomas Nitsche and Elmar Hennes highly selective commercial machine, this time running on 25 mhz (12 is normal).
Its a rebuild in the mephisto II case. With modern PCB.

Excalibur Grandmaster is a Plastic tournament chess board by Excalibur running a Ron Nelson program overclocked to 32 mhz instead 12.

H8 SOC.

The Monte Carlo L.E. Has 8 instead of 4 mhz,

An ed schroeder engine somewhere between mm4 and mm5.
IMO the strongest Ed Schroeder engine on 8 bit.

Saitek renaissance brute force modul is of course not brute force,
It was maybe once once planned to run a rathsmann engine, but that was never realised. So they asked frans morsch to come with an engine.
The brute force modul therefore is an early version of a typical frans morsch, but with hash. And i think at this early stage knowledge was not deleted and replaced by nullmove and preprocessing as much as in later dedicated machines.

Mephisto London is Richard Langs final dedicated chess computer on 68000 motorola hardware.
As you maybe know richard wrote the engine in assembler especially for this cpu,
So it has the amsterdam, dallas, roma, portorose, lyon, …. Vancouver…. London style.

The later Engines for mobiles and windows pcs were based on the new written C engine.
This is very different from the motorola 68000 assembler engine concerning playing style.

Took the London 16 bit IN as a reference point.

Gandalf 2.1 is a DOS engine by steen surballe and dan wolf from denmark.
It searches 1 ply brute force with extensions.

On 3000 cycles it makes arround 250 NPS.

Looking forward to it. Hopefully, you'll finish your 8-bit "Summer Tournament"? I particularly like this, because most of the games are fun and easily understandable. It also represents the first time when owning a chess computer (or computer to run a chess program) became a realistic possibility.

That is REALLY good colourisation! I think the original images must have been in very good condition for it to have come out that well.

My nice and wooden Fidelity Elegance is a small, tiny machine.
but looks beautiful and runs with 8 mhz.

Marty Hirschs MchessPro8 with 3000 cycles.
Mchess is a chess engine that came very early.
so it should be capable to run on slow hardware.
As far as i remember it was nearly after Rexchess was
the favourite PC engine.
At those days hercules graphical cards were the ultimo possible.
before it was EGA and CGA.

Nimzo2.2.1 with heavy knowledge made following the book
of Kmoch: Die Kunst der Bauernführung.
Can Chrilly Donninger show us the Art of pawn handling with 3000 cycles too ?

Richard Lang wrote his engine again from the scratch in C to transform it on the new machines.
Here it runs in a wooden dedicated chess computer by Millennium Chess. The board is called exclusive and like the Exclusive board by Hegener und Glaser, its nearly similar in size.
of course today machine has piece recognition instead of magnetic reed contacts.

One can define the speed of the cpu. in the genius engine from 50-300 in 50 mhz steps.
so i set it to the lowest possible speed.

TASC chessmachine with rebel engine.
usually 16 mhz running an ARM cpu.

The constellation by NOVAG is tuned with a new CPU that is in fact a FPGA running with 100 mhz.
will the big brother of the plastic superconny, the Expert show his strength too ?

Tiger Grenadier is the one and only dedicated chess computer with a Donninger engine.
As far as i understood the stories Chrilly told, he was asked to make the engine after the real programmer failed to do the job.
the machine was ready and had to be produced. but they had no working engine.
so they asked chrilly.
and so this machine came out.

Clock chess 89 is a zx spectrum engine that runs on my new upgraded ZX Spectrum N-go machine. instead of 3.5 mhz it runs with 28 mhz.

Colossus Chess 4 by Martin Bryant runs on a similar upgraded C64. it is overclocked from 1 to 48 mhz on this power C64.

CXG Sphinx 40 has a motorola 68000 cpu normally running with 8 mhz. The engine is a selective effort by Mark Taylor and David Levy. Here in our tournament it is boosted from 8 to 32 mhz.

My Fidelity Avantgarde v9 is a normal Spracklen machIII engine on a faster hardware platform. i think this is 68030 CPU.

MM4 with HG440 opening book and overclocked to 20 mhz.
Its running like a TurboKit Schroeder but has only exchanged CPU and ram into the module.
ChessTiger 11.2 DOS is a version i operated at the paderborn tournament. Christophe Therons engine in it with only 3000 cycles.

Bavaria has the original Cinema Film in the archives.

they never colorized it or made a new continuation of the original 7 episodes.

what they could do e.g. is to take the old film material and read it in picture for picture for making a new restaurated blyray, when doing this they could also colorize the new digitized material.

What the fans here do is to use the old DVD material that is weak, and colorize the stuff on their computers with commercial software.
this is of course less good. if you would have access to the original material and scan it picture by picture you could make much better.

i have no clue why bavaria is not making money out of the material they have for over 50 years now.

the 7 episodes are cult in germany.

but i have heard they are planning a successor remake of orion.
so maybe when they merchandise this new SF thing, they will also restaurate the old material.

its a pity Dietmar Schönherr is dead now. almost all makers , actors etc. are dead now.

I never understood how 2 SF series (Star Trek and german space patrol) could have been invented to the same time, with nearly same music and content without connection. A synchronicity ?

the first game of the tournament is between
chess tiger 11.2 against Chafitz ARB Sargon4 with 130 mhz.
As told, the pc programs run in the DOS BOX with 3000 cycles.

the endgame of this first game was very interesting.

of course those endgame knowledge was not known to Chafitz. The day it was made was to early.
but a modern program like chess tiger could have had this knowledge into it, if christophe would have programmed it into.
thats something i often told chris w. or ed schroeder.
why dont you implement endgame knowledge.
i know it costs a lot of work but it helps the program a lot and is not interfering middle or opening game play.

63. ...a5? was a mistake and gave away the win.
tiger could have made 64. Nb7!! to try to hold the game draw.

both programs played inaccurate in the endgame.
Chafitz because it was an old machine.

the second game is between
my 8 mhz Fidelity Kishon and colossus chess4 running
with 48 mhz.

but , as we can see here too, speed is not everything.
Colossus did a very strange blunder in move 31.

it seems the plot is hidden behind horizont moves,
so it is to deep for colossus search.

the next game is CSTal against Chess Genius.

Kind of Deja Vu for me, like championship in Paderborn.

Of course differrent hardware.

But CSTAL v93 is exactly the version i used in Paderborn championship where we won against Ossi and richard.

At this time on PC Hardware. Today different in the dedicated chess area.

CSTAL is doing between 350-400 NPS on the 286-16 mhz.
While Chess Genius, a new rewritten C engine, running on ARM CPU reduced to 50 mhz instead of the 300 mhz default.

Take a look:

Indeed. Once the white king gets to H1, there's no way to stop it from going back there every second move. Obvious to a human: one of many, many pieces of endgame knowledge that's obvious to a human. For a computer, though, it's probably more productive to try to get to the endgame completely won with only easy-to-find moves needed going forward.

Yes. The difference between having a plan and just doing „good looking moves“.
A plan leads to a destination . Good looking moves are not enough. They can win often but only against other programs that have no plan.

The next game was between Gandalf 2.1 and the millenium Exclusive board with the king engine.

the king normally also runs with 300 mhz but can be reduced in 10 mhz steps. so i can minimize the mhz to 10 mhz.

here the game:

Conny had good survival instinct! Smile

MChess is much stronger than I am, but, strangely, I predicted a lot of its moves. Maybe it has a similar playing style to myself? I don't think my playing style is that entertaining, though: I try to win, not to please the crowd!
