For learning you need conscious.
You need to forget the unimportant and remember the important, that is learning.
You want to know how to drive a car ?! That is forget the unimportant things and drive with the backbone.
Not with the head.

Neural nets do something no human chess programmer ever tried to emulate, to forget unimportant things and Destillate the important things. That is how we humans learn.

They are certainly better at evaluating chess positions than any machine that's ever gone before - but, maddeningly, they're not as good as they could be! They're too big, too slow, and they don't get everything right.

I'm in the realm of speculation here, but for me, there's something better than learning to be done: finding the as yet unknown deep patterns which will enable most positions to be evaluated accurately with code which is small and quick.

Big swings here! After move 4, it looked as though ClockChess was lost - wasting too much time having the queen chased around during development time.

Then in the end, it had, for a short while, 3 passed pawns! Disappointing not to be able to force a win from there.

This z80 program chris made is very old.
There is something strange with it, i have the feeling there is a sign bug in the opening. It often maximises disadvantage in opening. Then in middlegame in plays better. This was in all games so far, or ?!

My recollection (excuse me if I have misremembered) was that Chris's programs used to be weak in the openings, then, with CS-Tal, he invented a new way to engineer the opening book, and went straight from "one of the weakest", to "absolute best by a mile" in one jump!

But CSTAL is a pc engine. That came years later. I am talking about THIS clock chess 89 z80a engine.
And the 4 games it played in this tournament.

What a crazy game! A lot of moves either made no sense or were beyond my comprehension. Black made a lot more crazy moves than white did, though.

What have I learned? Something interesting - that Hitachi made a CISC (complex instruction set computer) CPU called "H8" (link - chess computers get a mention in the "Applications" section of that article)! Surprised

Damn - so close! Sad

I don't know whether I would have beaten Tiger, but I beat the forum analysis board by playing 47. Kf1 instead of 47. Kh1.

PostSubject: Re: „New beginning“ tournament    „New beginning“ tournament - Page 4 EmptyWed Apr 13, 2022 5:23 pm

It's a long time ago I played around with MESS, questions:

1. Are the engines come as *.exe ?

2. What's the average NPS ?

I am wondering if you can create neural nets for some of them. The minimum requirement would be that those engines do 3 plies within 0.1 second and if they can play by depth as time control.

I am probably asking the impossible.
