„New beginning“ tournament - Page 3 Empty
PostSubject: Re: „New beginning“ tournament    „New beginning“ tournament - Page 3 EmptySat Nov 13, 2021 12:36 pm

Round 3 begins.

In a game between Chess System Tal on 3000 cycles the Chafitz Sargon 4.0 with 130 mhz instead of
4 mhz makes a draw.

I think it could have been won by Tal but at a certain point in the game Tal made a move that gave a way
the win.

Disappointed with Glasgow here. Yes - it was joint 1st at the WMCCC in 1984, and it would beat me easily, but a couple of moves there were a bit dodgy. The joys of 8-bit chess computers!  Smile

I thought the TASC played some nice chess there: seems to have been out-searched by the SPARC.

although the material is unbalanced, the position is draw and no side makes progress. so adjudication Draw.

I have attached Pictures how the Phoenix Reflection machine looks like.
In the big display you see emulated buttons. You can either input the buttons via the cursor keys or with the big press sensory display. Therefore i use a pencil.

It fits in any munich, modular or exclusive chess board made by mephisto / saitek.
Here it is the exclusive board with magnetic sensors.

Nigel Short likes pinning pieces against the King! Smile

Using the reflection software, is it not possible to give both engines the same clock speed?

No but i can set the Mips of the cpu doing the emulation. But you would have to measure how fast the mhz is when you change the Mips.

PostSubject: Re: „New beginning“ tournament    „New beginning“ tournament - Page 3 EmptyWed Dec 29, 2021 3:18 pm

the game Clockchess versus Colossus Chess was very easily won by Martin Bryants Colossus Chess 4 on C64. Another game between Gandalf 2.1 on 3000 cycles was against the Reflection CXG Sphinx with 132 mhz instead of 8 mhz.

This was won by the later. The Sphinx by CXG is, if you forgot it, an engine sold by David Levy, obviously programmed by Mark Taylor.
Its a selective engine. The engine used selective 7 as playing style. that gives a more aggressive style.
one can set the style from 1 to 9, 5 is default.

I hope Chris can redeem himself in that game!

There was of course plenty of software development between the z80a version of clockchess for zx spectrum homecomputer and the PC Dos Version of chess system tal, although running at 3000 cycles only (we never tested cstal on such a slow hardware).

Nice game! The story for me is that Chris offered Ed the exchange sacrifice of rook for bishop, and Ed took the bait. However, this left Ed's king dangerously exposed with Chris's queen and two bishops attacking it, and this attack succeeded in the end!

For Chris, celebration!  bounce   „New beginning“ tournament - Page 3 1f37b  „New beginning“ tournament - Page 3 1f378

For Ed, violins. „New beginning“ tournament - Page 3 1f3bb „New beginning“ tournament - Page 3 1f3bb „New beginning“ tournament - Page 3 1f3bb

There are things you cannot find out via search. Either you know it or you drive into the abyss.
White did not castle, and the bishops and the black passed pawn was strong.
The funny thing is on the very slow pc cstal did 400 NPS while the 6502 pushed to 75 mhz did 20.000-30.000 nps !!

Over two decades on, I can still remember Ed saying: "I'm taking knowledge out [of the evaluation function]". His point being that deeper search made most of the knowledge redundant, because the search would uncover it anyway.

At the time, he didn't know that in the late 2010s, we would discover that having a large amount of knowledge is more valuable than a deep search.

IMO, Chris is guilty as well: he believed that the route to success was getting better at hand-coding knowledge - but from today's perspective, it looks as though this was never going to work: it seems as though NNs confer some "mystery knowledge" (chess patterns that most chess players, with the possible exception of very strong ones, simply aren't aware of, and which are important).

To be fair though, none of us predicted the NN revolution in the game!
